The Three-Body Problem

I've read all three books before writing this review; and I can say: the first is the strongest and most exciting of the series. Hard science concepts are mixed with interesting characters and novel problems that may be feel a sense of scale and wonder as I read.

Another mediocre read, I’m not having much luck at the moment! This started off so well, I was absolutely hooked by the clever, sophisticated scientific concepts and Liu’s easy writing style. The sections set in 1960s China were fascinating, it kind of felt like a sweeping historical sci-fi. I was also really invested in the main characters early on, and I especially loved Da Shi, the noir-ish detective with a bit of an attitude.

But then somewhere around the halfway mark things got really bogged down with the science, in fact the science became the main character. The scientific concepts became very hard for a casual reader to grasp and Liu would spend pages, sometimes entire chapters, dissecting and analysing these complex ideas. Quite frankly, I got bored and felt quite alienated as a reader. All of the momentum went out of the storytelling and character development, which just felt criminal as they were such interesting characters. It was such a disappointing turn of events as I was loving it up until this point, and was so excited to read the other books in the trilogy.

« Le problème à trois corps » est trilogie de SF chinoise, voire de hard-SF. En 2021, le roman avait déjà une belle renommée car il avait obtenu le prix Hugo (en 2015) et que Barack Obama en avait fait l‘éloge public. Comme j‘écris ma chronique avec 3 ans de retard, je peux ajouter qu‘elle a encore gagnée en visibilité cette année, puisqu‘elle a été adaptée en série par Netflix !

1. En Chine, la Révolution culturelle bat son plein. Ye Wenjie est une jeune astrophysicienne dont le père, également éminent scientifique, a été accusé d’être contre-révolutionnaire, et exécuté sous ses yeux. Elle refuse de le condamner et est envoyée en camps de rééducation… bref, révolution culturelle et fort passif pour Ye Wenjie, vous voyez le truc. Puis, ses compétences étant reconnues, elle sera finalement affecté à la base secrète de Côte-Rouge pour participer à un mystérieux projet…

40 ans plus tard, alors qu’une étrange vague de suicides frappe la communauté scientifique internationale. Wang Miao, un scientifique expert en nano-technologies, se voit confronté à d’étranges phénomènes qu’il va rapidement relier à un nouveau, et mystérieux, jeu de réalité virtuelle.

J‘ai trouvé ma lecture passionnante, et palpitante, mais j‘ai quand même quelques réserves. Le livre est complexe, ce qui est assez naturel pour un roman de hard-science, mais je l’ai aussi parfois trouvé confus. Si les aspects scientifiques sont (vraiment) bien traités, les personnages, eux, ne sont pas assez développés. À l’exception notable de Ye Wentje, et peut-être de Shi Qiang, les personnages sont à peine ébauchés et cela m‘a gêné pour apprécier réellement ma lecture.

Je suis néanmoins content de l’avoir lu… mais je n‘était manifestement pas pressé ni d‘écrire à son sujet, ni de lire la suite 😉

Jag köpte den då jag hört talas om den tidigare, och tänkte att det var fint att läsa den innan jag eventuellt tittar på serieadaptionen på Netflix (jag har också förstått att det finns en kinesisk version som ligger på Youtube som möjligtvis är mer trogen boken, men också vansinnigt lång). Det är också väldigt roligt med science fiction som översätts till svenska.

Jeg ble litt forvirret av boken når jeg begynte å lese den, selv om jeg har hørt ett sammendrag i en podd tidligere. Det føltes litt som att bakgrunden med kulturrevolutionen var ett sidospår och det var svårt att förstå varför det var med i historien. Det grundar dock berättelsen i kinesisk historia och ger också en bakgrund till varför några av karaktärena blev dem de blev.

Det jag hade svårast att greppa var nog detta datorspelet. Jag tyckte att det kändes lite krystat och jag hade svårt att engagera mig i det. Det är svårt att beskriva ett spel som skall vara alltuppslukande i bokform, i ett helt annat medium. Att spel kan vara uppslukande vet jag, jag har ju spelat Dwarf fortress, men det skulle vara svårt att vidareförmedla den känslan. Jag funderar ändå om spelets funktion i berättelsen kunde förmedlats på ett annat sätt. Det känns fortfarande lite som att det inte passar in, en lite för lätt lösning.

Jag tycker i grunden att boken lyfter en rad olika intressanta ämnen som frihet, autonomi, livets och universums mening, om vårt eventuella ansvar för andra arter och världen vi bor på, och om andra arters eventuella ansvar för oss. Det är ämnen som bara är öppnade i denna boken och man lär nog behöva läsa de två andra också om man utforska dem vidare. Om de gör det på ett bra sätt lär vi få se. Just som denna volymen slutar är saker bara så vitt börjat rulla. Kommer nog läsa de andra volymen också, men väntar nog till de andra två är färdigt översatta.

J'ai passé un bon moment à lire le problème des trois corps. C'est bien écrit, avec une structure narrative intéressante qui fait qu'on rentre facilement dans l'histoire. J'ai beaucoup apprécié de lire un livre chinois, dans un contexte et une histoire qui change du tout-étatunien de la science fiction, que je connais mal et que j'ai trouvé vraiment intéressant. Le côté science-fiction "dure" est aussi plaisant, on comprends dès le départ qu'il est féru de physique et qu'on va se plonger dans des questions théoriques, et ça fait du bien. Maintenant venons aux aspects négatifs : déjà il faut bien le dire, si j'ai trouvé que c'était un bon livre, je ne comprends pas sa réputation internationale, il y a plusieurs points (comme la société des tri***) que je trouve assez bancals et pas très crédibles. Si le sujet est amené de manière originale et prenante, on en arrive au final à un scénario assez classique dans la science fiction et que j'ai trouvé un peu décevant. Enfin, le côté physique prenant du début finit par être pesant dans les derniers chapitres (comme avec les protons à 11 dimensions qui m'ont clairement perdus). Évidemment, je vais lire les deux livres suivants pour me faire une idée de la trilogie et peut-être que je me rangerais à l'avis dithyrambique de pas mal de mondes. Mais en attendant, ça m'a pas fait tomber de ma chaise. (Il faut sans doute également noter que l'auteur a apparemment apporté son soutien à la politique chinoise au Xinjiang d'après le New Yorker)

I liked the plot and the unusual idea for the story, but the characters are somehow not so well detailed and it was hard to immerse myself into the book. Nevertheless, I'm going to read the second one in this series.

Imaginative and thoughtful "hard" science fiction. Fingers crossed that Netflix will do a good job with the series. The setting in China was interesting. Some parts were excellent, while others were a little tiresome (e.g., some of the military/police conversations), but I enjoyed it quite a bit overall. The chapter with Newton, Von Neumann and the human-formation computer was a fascinating and humorous highlight for me.

A good hard fiction novel that explores the question of making first contact. It's a quick read that has decent character development, a smooth flowing plot, and asks deep philosophical science questions.
